NPH Mexico: A New Chapter for Our Children

After years of cherished memories and deep gratitude for all that Miacatlán has given our NPH family, we are making a significant decision for the well-being of our youngest children. To provide them with a more family-oriented environment and better educational opportunities, the primary school children currently living in Miacatlán will transition to Casa Buen Señor in Cuernavaca this year.

This move ensures they continue to grow and thrive under the same core values that have always guided us—love, family, and a commitment to their future. While change can be challenging, we are dedicated to making this transition as smooth and positive as possible for every child, caregiver, and staff member involved.

Why This Move is Important

At NPH, every decision we make is driven by our mission to provide a stable, nurturing, and empowering environment for the children in our care. This transition is designed to:

  • Keep Families Together: Younger and older siblings will no longer be separated across different locations, fostering deeper family bonds.
  • Improve Educational Opportunities: With access to nearby public schools and specialized after-school programs, children will receive a well-rounded education tailored to their growth.
  • Ensure Long-Term Sustainability: Maintaining the Miacatlán site has become increasingly cost-inefficient. By optimizing resources, we can better serve our children now and in the future.

What This Means for Our Community

Primary School Students Moving to Casa Buen Señor

  • Students will attend public schools within walking distance of their new home, promoting community integration.
  • NPH will supplement their education with specialized courses in English, technology, gender equity empowerment, religion, and physical education.
  • A partnership with Universidad Estatal de Morelos will provide additional tutoring and training opportunities.

High School Students at Casa Buen Señor

  • High school students will continue attending NPH’s private technical school. There are no plans to close this program.
  • We remain committed to improving the school and supporting students as they pursue university or career pathways.

The Future of Hacienda San Salvador

Hacienda San Salvador will remain an essential part of NPH Mexico, shifting focus toward sustainable agricultural projects and educational partnerships that will support our mission for years to come. The children and staff will also continue visiting Miacatlán frequently for events such as Family Days, Christmas, Three Kings Day, Holy Week, Quinceañeras, Godparent Day, Anniversaries, Visitor Days, Day of the Dead, and spiritual retreats—at least twice a year—and to spend weekends there as well. Key initiatives include:

  • Expanding greenhouses and pig farming while discontinuing corn production.
  • Exploring new land-use opportunities, such as sugarcane farming through rental agreements.
  • Renting educational facilities to private schools or universities, with early discussions underway with Universidad Estatal de Morelos to expand academic programs.

Developing Casa Buen Señor for a Family-Style Home

To ensure a nurturing environment, we will transform office spaces into “Casas Familiares,” designed to replicate a traditional family setting. This transformation will:

  • Create smaller, home-like living spaces.
  • Keep siblings together whenever possible.
  • Provide stable caregivers to foster stronger emotional bonds.
  • Integrate life skills such as cooking and household responsibilities.

Challenges and How You Can Help

We recognize that this transition comes with logistical and financial challenges:

  • Time Sensitivity: Infrastructure updates, donor engagement, and staffing adjustments need to be addressed before August.
  • Financial Constraints: Local donors remain the primary funding source for this transition.
  • Emotional and Logistical Impact: We are committed to transparency and open communication with our children, caregivers, and staff throughout this process.

Your support is important in making this transition successful. If you’re interested in contributing, donate here.

Together, we can ensure that every child at NPH Mexico continues to grow up in a loving, supportive, and empowering environment.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Will any of the buildings, physical monuments, mural tiles, or items in Miacatlán that have been donated or named in honor of certain people over the years be moved or transferred to Cuernavaca?
A:
No, those items and memorials will remain in Miacatlán, as the plan is to continue holding events and activities at the hacienda.

Q: What about the pool in HSS? Will there be one added to Casa Buen Señor in Cuernavaca?
A:
No, there is already a nearby public pool that the children can use.

Q: What is the long-term plan for weekly Mass in Cuernavaca? Has someone local committed to celebrating Mass weekly, or will the children attend a local church?
A:
Currently, Mass is held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. in Miacatlán, celebrated by a group of visiting nuns. In Cuernavaca, the children attend Sunday Mass at a nearby church called Santa Catalina, just a 12-minute walk away. In the future, however, the hope is to secure a parish priest who can celebrate Mass at Casa Buen Señor for the entire community once everyone is settled there.

Q: Who will teach or provide complementary religious education?
A:
A catechist, Guillermina Porcayo, has been hired and is developing a plan to offer catechism classes for the youth living at Casa Buen Señor. These classes will also be open to children in the local community. Plans for confirmations are already underway, supported by a strong relationship with Bishop Ramón.

Q: What other needs are still felt after the loss of Father Phil?
A:
Father Phil is deeply missed—especially for his short, meaningful, and uplifting homilies that spoke directly to the NPH community. Mass is now celebrated outside of NPH, which has required some adjustment, as the style and length are different. The traditional music group (“estudiantina”) does not play during these Masses, but the youth continue practicing their music at home each day.
