Midwest Area

Regional Director’s Message

Dear Friend,

You are receiving this newsletter because you live in one of the eight states that comprise the Midwest Region of NPH USA.  Although a majority of our MW Region donors and friends live in the Chicago area (which is where we opened an office roughly 25 years ago), a significant number live outside that area. Consequently, I have tried to make these past regional letters of mine be relevant to everyone, and not just those who live in one area of the region.

This time, though, I want to focus on a unique golf event benefitting the children of NPH that will take place in northwest suburban Chicago on August 13.  Even if you aren’t a golfer, I think you will find it interesting to learn about this event, if for no other reason than it will give you an idea of the broad appeal that our mission and this event have to donors and celebrities who live all across our region and even our country.

The event is the NPH USA Football Legends Classic.  What makes this golf outing stand out from typical golf outings is that it features approximately 26 ex-NFL football players, about half of whom are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the remaining half split between ex-Chicago Bears and former players from other teams.

Do the names Dan Hampton, Doug Plank, Otis Wilson, Steve McMichael, Al Harris, Emery Moorehead, Jim Morrissey, Donnell Woolford, and Dez Clark ring any bells?  They are all ex- Chicago Bears who have joined us at this event in the past.  How about Joe DeLamielleure, Lem Barney, Ted Hendricks, Bobby Bell, Roger Wehrli, Dave Casper, Dave Robinson, Paul Krause, and Will Shields?  They are Pro Football Hall of Famers have been past participants at our event.  Other football legends who have participated include NFL veterans like Ed “Too Tall” Jones, Art Still, Max Montoya, Joe Jacoby, and Billy Joe Dupree.  And the above is only a sample of the football legends who have joined us over the past five years!

Each foursome is paired up with one of these football legends to create a fivesome, so not only do our event guests have the opportunity to mix and mingle with these ex-players during lunch, a cocktail reception, and dinner, but they also get to play 18 holes of golf with one of them at the beautiful Biltmore Country Club in North Barrington, Illinois.

It truly is a unique event.  Outside of the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony and perhaps the Super Bowl, you would be hard pressed to find a gathering of so many Hall of Famers anywhere else in the country.

mw2Adding to the star power of the event this year will be our special guest and emcee, the legendary sports broadcaster and good friend of NPH, Bob Costas.  Bob sponsors several pequeños from NPH Guatemala, and he visited there several years ago.  At the annual induction ceremony of the National Baseball Hall of Fame just two weekends before our golf outing, Bob will be publicly recognized for winning the prestigious 2018 Ford C. Frick Award, which is given for excellence in baseball broadcasting.  He was selected over finalists Buddy Blattner, Joe Buck, Dizzy Dean, Don Drysdale, Al Michaels, Joe Morgan and Pee Wee Reese.

It really is a first-class golf outing that draws donors from several states.   For more information, please feel free to give me a call (312-386-7475) or visit the event page of our website:  https://nphusa.org/event/legendsclassic/   As I write this in mid-July, several foursomes are still available, but act fast if you are interested because this event is sure to sell out.   Event sponsorship opportunities are also available.  Contact our Midwest Region Development Officer, Ron Rado (312-985-7060), for more details on event sponsorship.

Hope to see you there!

All the best,

Chuck Allworth
