Healing from Severe Malnutrition at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital

In Haiti, unsafe water and limited access to nutritious food place young children at constant risk. For infants and toddlers, even short periods of illness or poor nutrition can quickly become life-threatening.

That reality became painfully clear when an 18-month-old girl arrived at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital in critical condition.

A Child in Crisis

By the time she reached St. Damien, the child was suffering from severe acute malnutrition of the Kwashiorkor type, a dangerous condition marked by swelling of the body rather than visible weight loss. Her face and limbs were swollen. Her abdomen was distended. Painful wounds had formed on her ankles, and frequent diarrhea left her weak and irritable.

Her parents were deeply concerned. Her mother remained at her side constantly, while her father visited whenever he could, watching anxiously as doctors assessed their child’s condition.

Specialized Nutritional Care Begins

At St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, care began immediately. The medical team initiated a comprehensive nutritional treatment plan designed specifically for children with severe malnutrition—care that requires close monitoring, medical expertise, and ongoing support.

Recovery was not immediate. In the first days, progress came slowly. But within four to five days, signs of improvement began to appear. Swelling subsided. Skin irritation eased. Wounds started to heal. Diarrhea stopped.

With time, the changes became increasingly visible.

Steady Progress and Recovery

With continued care, her body began to respond. Carefully prepared therapeutic milk and nutrient-rich ready-to-use foods replenished what malnutrition had stripped away. Gradually, her strength returned. She began to sit up. She engaged with her surroundings. Weight gain followed, and her condition stabilized under the steady watch of the medical team. After about a month in the hospital, the child was discharged and fully recovered.

For her parents, the transformation was profound. What began as fear and uncertainty ended with relief. And deep gratitude for the care their daughter received.

Why Specialized Nutritional Care at St. Damien Matters

Severe malnutrition remains a serious threat to young children across Haiti, particularly where clean water, nutritious food, and early medical intervention are limited. Treating it requires more than food alone. Treatment demands specialized medical care, careful monitoring, and sustained support.

At St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, children facing the most serious nutritional conditions receive that care when they need it most.
