A Story of Healing at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital

When Davie arrived at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital in Haiti, he was dangerously ill. What first seemed like a common sickness had become something far more serious.

He was only 11 years old and had already experienced profound loss. After his mother passed away, Davie and his sister were left to navigate life on their own. When he became sick, his symptoms seemed manageable at first. But as his condition worsened, it became clear he needed medical attention his family could not provide on their own.

Without access to specialized care, Davie’s illness could have ended very differently. Instead, he reached St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, one of the few places in Haiti equipped to care for children facing serious medical conditions.

The Care That Helped Davie Survive

At St. Damien, doctors quickly identified the severity of Davie’s condition. Fluid had built up around his heart, putting his life at risk. He needed immediate intervention.

The medical team performed two surgeries to remove the fluid and stabilize him. It was a complex process that required skill, coordination, and the ability to respond quickly.

“I could have died,” Davie reflects. “But I was diagnosed and treated.”

His survival shows what timely, specialized care can make possible for children in Haiti.

The Support That Helped Davie Move Forward

Recovery brought new challenges, but it also gave Davie a new understanding of what support can mean.

In the years that followed, he faced moments of uncertainty and hardship. Still, he found strength through faith, perseverance, and the relationships that grew from the care he received.

For Davie, St. Damien became more than a hospital. It became a place where he felt seen, supported, and connected to people who continued to care about his life.

“When I say St. Damien is my family, it’s not because they gave me birth,” he says. “Family is about love and compassion.”

That sense of belonging helped shape the person he is today. Davie now speaks about St. Damien with gratitude, not only because his life was saved, but because the care he received gave him the chance to keep moving forward.

“Because of many generous people, I survived,” he says. “Now I am helping others.”

How Access to Care Changed Davie’s Life

Davie’s story reflects the reality many children in Haiti face when serious illness strikes. Access to specialized medical care is limited, and delays can carry serious consequences.

At St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, children receive care when they need it most. For Davie, that access changed the course of his life.

Through Hearts for Haiti, your sustained support helps ensure St. Damien can continue providing care for children and high-risk mothers who depend on the hospital.
