In January 2026, six-year-old Cassandra arrived at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital in Haiti in critical condition. After months of illness and delay, there was little time left to act.
For months, Cassandra had been gravely ill. Persistent fever, severe abdominal pain, swelling of her face and limbs, and frequent nosebleeds had slowly taken over her small body. Once lively and joyful, she grew pale and withdrawn. Her mother, Françoise Joseph*, watched helplessly as her daughter’s condition worsened.
As weeks turned into months, Cassandra’s illness became harder to ignore. And harder to treat. Living far from specialized care, her family faced growing uncertainty as each attempt to find answers led to more questions and delays.
Determined to find help, Cassandra’s mother brought her to a private hospital near their home in L’Asile, a rural community several hours from Port-au-Prince. She hoped doctors could explain what was happening and provide relief. Instead, she was told the facility lacked the resources to run the tests Cassandra urgently needed, and that she would have to look elsewhere.

From there, the search for care continued. Cassandra’s mother moved from one facility to another, each time hoping for answers, each time facing the same limitations. Essential tests were unavailable. Treatment could not begin. With every referral, time slipped further away, and the fear that her daughter’s condition was worsening became impossible to ignore.
When I was told my child could continue her care at St. Damien, it was a great relief. But the insecurity caused us to lose precious time.
After Cassandra was referred to St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, the challenge was no longer knowing where she needed to go, but whether she could get there in time. Widespread insecurity and ongoing disruptions to travel across Haiti made movement unpredictable and dangerous, forcing her mother to wait for a moment when the journey to Port-au-Prince was possible.
When a safe opportunity to travel finally emerged, there was no room for hesitation. Françoise made the journey across the country with her sick child in her arms, fully aware of the risks and uncertainty ahead, but driven by one clear purpose: reaching the care Cassandra needed to survive.
Upon arrival at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, Cassandra was admitted through the emergency department and quickly transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There, the pace of care shifted. Doctors focused on stabilizing her condition and responding to the severity of her illness.
For the first time in months, her mother noticed a change. Cassandra was able to rest, and some of the most intense symptoms began to ease. That shift was made possible in a place designed for children at their most critical moments.
At St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) serves children whose conditions are too severe to be treated elsewhere, offering specialized care to high-risk pediatric patients when timely intervention matters most.
What Cassandra’s family endured reflects the reality many families across Haiti face when serious illness strikes. Access to specialized pediatric care is limited, and even small delays can carry serious consequences. For children like Cassandra, St. Damien Pediatric Hospital offers a lifeline that provides quality, dignified care to those who have nowhere else to turn.
