Karen Susan (Sue) Haverkamp, MD, MSPH
Dr. Sue Haverkamp served as a volunteer in the medical clinic at NPH Mexico in 1989-1990, while on a leave of absence from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She became fluent in Spanish while working with the more than 500 children who resided there at the time, and credits the children she met there with inspiring her life’s work in Pediatrics.
Sue returned to the US to complete medical school at UMass and a residency in Pediatrics and a Master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Colorado. Sue has worked since then as a pediatrician for vulnerable children in Federally Qualified Health Centers in Denver, Oakland, and Chicago, and as faculty in Pediatrics at the University of Colorado, University of California San Francisco, and Northwestern University.
Sue continued to visit and volunteer in the NPH Mexico clinic as often as her schedule allowed. In 2005, Father Rick Frechette invited her to become the first Regional Coordinator for Mexico when NPH International formed a medical advisory team. Sue served as the Executive Director of Medical Services for the NPHI Medical team in 2008, assisting with development and dissemination of a protocol manual that is still used in the NPH homes today. She stepped back when the needs of her own son made the necessary travel impossible, serving as Regional Medical Coordinator for Mexico again until 2011, and as a consultant as needed since then. Sue and the other members of the NPHI Medical Team helped to coordinate the international medical response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010. Though Sue has never had the opportunity to visit St. Damien’s personally, she has met and collaborated with some of their amazing pediatricians and staff, and believes in their mission to provide high quality medical treatment for disadvantaged and sick children in Haiti.
