Chloe Aguilar

Austin, TX The University of Texas at Austin August 2024 NPH Honduras Clinic Assistant |
…
Hi, my name is Chloe! I graduated from the University of Texas in May 2024 with degrees in Public Health and Spanish, and my goal is to work as a physician assistant. Because I live so close to home, I enjoy spending time with my parents and two siblings in Austin! I also love being outdoors, so I spend a lot of time walking, hiking, cycling, and tanning in the Texas sun!
I am so grateful to have the opportunity to serve with NPH as a clinic assistant! Through this position, I can help provide preventative/primary care to the children of the ranch and work on public health projects, which are some of my passions! Many of the children at NPH Honduras live with chronic conditions, so I hope to help them create positive healthcare experiences, and I also want to get them excited about keeping their bodies healthy. Prior to applying to volunteer with NPH, I had learned more about child exploitation in the United States through an organization called Pedal the Pacific; through this experience, I developed a greater understanding of what it means to advocate for children and keep them safe and hope to do so in Honduras as well. Above all, I value making meaningful relationships with the children and adults at NPH and growing closer to the Lord through this experience.

…
Hi! My name is Svea Althausen and I am from Reno, Nevada. I graduated in May of 2024 from Bates College. I have two younger brothers and three dogs. I come from a very outdoorsy family and love to spend time outside kayaking and hiking. Throughout my life, giving back was always emphasized. Before volunteering with One World Surgery, I volunteered in a variety of schools as a tutor and support teacher and volunteered as a peer health counselor at my college. These experiences shaped me as a person.
I had the opportunity to come down to two different NPH homes and volunteer as a general volunteer within the past year. These experiences were life changing for me. I was able to see the emphasis on community and caring for one another. This experience inspired me to apply to volunteer for a year.

…
I grew up in a small town in Oregon as the 5th of 9 siblings (2 girls, 5 boys in a row, and 2 younger sisters). Love being in the outdoors and traveling. I enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, biking, kayaking, gardening, and enjoying family and friends.
I have always wanted to be more immersed in other cultures and enjoy working with young people. We have talked about doing extended volunteer work with international locations especially since we visited the NPH home in Mexico.

Turner, OR Oregon State University July 2023 NPH Honduras Sponsorship Office Assistant |
…
I am a retired woman of 65, happily married with 4 children and 8 grandchildren. My husband and I are from large families and live in the Pacific Northwest near Tacoma Washington. I love the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with family.
My husband and I became familiar with NPH through our former parish in Bellevue, WA. We have been godparents for many years and were able to visit the home in Mexico while on a retreat with other parish members many years ago. We have also been to several fundraiser events in the Pacific Northwest and have had the privilege of hosting NPH workers who came to the Seattle area for training. We believe NPH is doing a wonderful job of fulfilling a need in the regions that it operates and would love to take an active role in caring for the children and helping in the NPH community.

Scottsdale, AZ Arizona State University July 2023 NPH Honduras Visitor Coordinator |
…
Hi! I’m Natalie Brothen and I am 22 years old. I was born in Nashville, TN but was raised and lived in Scottsdale, AZ for most of my life. I am graduating in May from Arizona State University with my degree in Multilingual Education. I am currently a kindergarten teacher and I love it. Working with kids has always been my strongest passion and I feel honored to get to continue that passion in Honduras!
NPH has had a special place in my heart since I was in the third grade! I feel called to serve with NPH because I adore working with kids, and NPH provides the love and care that these kids deserve. The overwhelming amount of love these kids have is unlike anything I’ve ever known!

Matthew Freeman
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Dallas, TX Creighton University July 2024 NPH Honduras Swim Instructor and Catechist |
…
Hello! My name is Matthew Freeman and I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. I am a recent graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska where I majored in Spanish with minors in biology and theology. I enjoy traveling in Latin America and am grateful for my opportunities to study abroad in the Dominican Republic for a semester and spend three summers in Peru with an organization called The Quispicanchi Project. I am looking forward to joining the NPH family in Honduras next!
I feel called to serve specifically with NPH because of their emphasis on building relationships that are mutually beneficial. As much as I am looking forward to sharing my gifts and talents, I am equally as hopeful to be graced by the gifts and talents of the children, NPH staff and other volunteers. I have learned so much about others, myself, and the world through previous experiences in Latin America, and I am optimistic that NPH will be a great place for me to continue that learning.
Also, as a practicing Catholic, I feel especially inspired by the legacy of Fr. Wasson in making a preferential option for the poor a foundational component of NPH’s history and values. NPH’s model of accompaniment and living in community with those on the margins is something that I am really looking forward to sharing in!

Trey Gustafson
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Minneapolis, MN University of Michigan January 2025 NPH Dominican Republic One World Surgery Patient Coordinator |
…
Hello! My name is Trey, and I’m from Minneapolis, MN. I graduated from the University of Michigan in May 2024 with a major in Economics while on the pre-med track. I have a diverse range of interests and experiences, from public policy to helping build a race car in college to working at a biomedical device company focused on treating prostate cancer. Ultimately, my goal is to use these varied experiences to shape a career as a doctor. In my free time, I enjoy biking and running outdoors, hanging out with friends and family, and reading good books!
Last year, I had the opportunity to volunteer with One World Surgery and NPH in Honduras for three weeks. I expected to connect with OWS’s mission, which I certainly did. Although I was less familiar with NPH beforehand, after spending time with the pequeños and staff, I became equally drawn to NPH’s values and mission. I left NPH with a strong desire to return, build stronger relationships with the pequeños, and hopefully play a positive role in their development. For these reasons, I’m incredibly excited to volunteer in the Dominican Republic and have the opportunity to work with both OWS and NPH!

Emmy Hess
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Marion, Kansas University of Kansas January 2024 NPH Guatemala Certified Nurse Assistant |
…
My name is Emmy and I am from a small town, Marion, Kansas, but a big family (I’m the youngest of 6 girls). I just graduated from KU with a degree in Human Biology and a degree in Spanish. I am Kansas born and raised, but LOVE to travel around the states and the world! Healthcare is one of my passions, as I have been a CNA since the age of 16, where I currently hold jobs in the medical department of the local county jail and in the PICU of a children’s hospital. Medical school is in my future to continue my work in healthcare! In my free time I enjoy reading, hiking, painting, gardening, and just about anything crafty or outdoorsy!
I looked at many volunteering organizations, but none of them quite fit my values like NPH. One of my biggest goals in my professional life is to provide equitable healthcare to the impoverished and marginalized communities that need it most. I have a lot to learn and a lot to give, and NPH allows me to do both! Working with children and creating lasting relationships while also soaking in cultures is something that also excites me about volunteering with NPH. The chance to create a safe, loving, and hopeful environment for these children is so amazing! I am thrilled and honored to serve for an organization that has a great mission and offers sustainable programs for its communities.

Katy Hickman
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Bear, DE Ithaca College January 2025 NPH Dominican Republic Occupational Therapist |
…
Hi! My name is Katy, and I graduated from Ithaca College in 2021 with a degree in occupational therapy. I am very family-oriented as I come from a large family (3 brothers and 3 sisters!) and now have many nieces and nephews to spoil. I have a passion for pediatrics and love seeing kids learn and grow. My other passions include travel, learning about other cultures, and health and wellness!
I have been interested in the work NPH does since college and always hoped I would be able to be a part of it. In too many places, children with disabilities are seen as less than their peers and are not given the support they need to be successful. Beyond that, parents and families are not given the education needed to support their children. As an OT, I want to be part of NPH’s mission to love and support these kiddos!

Kayleigh Hotaling
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Fulton, NY Nazareth University January 2024 NPH Guatemala Chicas Poderosas Program Coordinator |
…
I’m Kayleigh and I am from a small town in Central New York. Growing up I loved to keep myself busy and get involved in as many activities as possible, and I continue to be this way! In high school, I grew to love service and started volunteering with various organizations. This ultimately led to my decision to study Social Work and Community Youth Development in college. My four years of college were some of my favorite times because I was able to learn and practice what I truly love – serving others! When it came time to graduate in May 2022, I knew I wanted to take a break and do a year of service, specifically in Latin America. Throughout college I studied Spanish and immersed myself in Spanish speaking communities through service. My passion is to become a bilingual Social Worker to be able to better serve Spanish speaking children and families.
This past year I had the honor to complete a year of service with Amigos de Jesus, a children’s home in rural Honduras. My experience showed me how valuable it is to be in community and solidarity with people in other countries. The little moments of joy and love in the midst of chaos are what calls me back to service in Latin America. I have learned so much, yet know that there is so much more to learn! I am super excited to be in a volunteer position that I am passionate about and can’t wait to see what NPH Guatemala has to offer!

Julie Martin
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Cherokee, KS Kansas State University July 2023 NPH Honduras Occupational Therapy Assistant |
…
My name is Julie Martin and I am a Kansas State University graduate as of this May with a degree in Kinesiology and Gerontology. I am originally from a small town located in the Southeast corner of Kansas, called Cherokee. I am the youngest of four with a very close-nit family that still resides there today. I have been actively involved in my sorority (Delta Delta Delta) during my time in college as well as our Catholic Student Center, St. Isidore’s. I have a deep love for sports, community, and service and I can’t wait to start this journey with NHP!
I have been inspired to serve through numerous experiences, but was deeply impacted when I journeyed to Pamplona, Peru for a mission trip with our student center the spring break of 2022. This is where I first encountered God’s true presence in a place poverty struck every aspect of life. I experienced a joy I didn’t know existed amongst people who didn’t have running water. I knew the impact these people had on me was much greater than the impact my work had on them. This moved my heart to look at my own life, question what my purpose of success was motivated by, and who I was living for. Was it for myself? Or was it for God? The love, joy, and peace that I experienced that week inspired me to draw closer to mission, draw closer to a new way of living, draw closer to the fulfillment I knew existed in serving others. I am beyond excited to endure this opportunity God has placed in my life and give back to an organization that will inspire me to change others.

Ellie Meara
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Wellesley, MA Notre Dame July 2023 NPH Honduras One World Surgery Patient Coordinator |
…
Hi, my name is Ellie Meara. I was born in California before moving to Australia, where I became a citizen. I moved, again, to Boston in 2010. I am one of three siblings. We all went to college together, following our parents’ legacy at Notre Dame. Throughout my life, my two passions have been drawing and medicine. My interest in medicine started by observing my two parents who are physicians. However, after seeing clinics in Mexico and spending time in the NICU at Boston Children’s, this passion intensified. I am so excited to continue this journey at One World Surgery (at NPH Honduras), while also being around an amazing community of children and volunteers.
I spent time volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club and fell in love with the children. However, my service was only 8 weeks, and I wanted to seek an opportunity where I could make a greater impact. I love how genuine and enthusiastic children are and these are characteristics I want to absorb and learn from. I also am drawn to NPH’s connection with OWS. As previously stated, I would love to advance my medical exposure while being in the context of such an amazing program.

…
Hi! I’m Kara Nutson! I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2024 with a degree in public health. I love being outdoors in Austin with my friends and family (including two golden retrievers), but I will always take an opportunity to travel! In the coming years, I hope to become a physician and integrate public health into my work in medicine.
I am so excited and incredibly grateful to be volunteering at NPH Honduras! I have felt called to volunteer with NPH since first visiting the home in 2020. I feel lucky to be able to form meaningful relationships and directly impact the lives of others. In addition, NPH’s partnership with One World Surgery piques my interest in both medicine and global health!

Iris Ohlrogge
Hometown: Alma mater: Start Date: Location: Position: |
Middleton, WI Luther College July 2023 NPH Honduras One World Surgery Patient Coordinator |
…
Hello! My name is Iris Ohlrogge and I am very excited to be joining NPH Honduras in July 2023! I am from Middleton, WI and graduated from Luther College in Decorah, IA in May of 2022. I majored in International Studies, Global Health, and Spanish, with a minor in Health Promotion. In college I studied abroad in two different locations, one in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and the other in Roatán, Honduras. After college I took a gap year and worked as a Health Assistant at an elementary school and as a CNA/Caregiver at a memory care facility. I really enjoyed both jobs and I gained a lot of new experiences and skills that will hopefully help me in Honduras!
I want to serve because I enjoy working with youth and I like to work with Spanish-speaking communities. I love Central America in general. I have been to Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico in the past. I enjoy learning about new cultures and meeting new people. Also, fun fact, I am adopted from Guatemala and have been back there six times! This is part of the reason why I am so passionate about Central America. I have also studied the region in my university classes. In addition, I am passionate about health care and health advocacy, so I am super excited to be working as the Patient Coordinator for One World Surgery at the NPH Honduras home. I am grateful to NPH for this opportunity to serve in Honduras. I feel ready and excited to immerse myself in a new culture and begin this year of service with NPH!

Baton Rouge, LA Birmingham-Southern College January 2025 NPH Guatemala Communications Officer Assistant |
…
Hello! My name is Mary Owen, and I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I graduated in 2022 from Birmingham-Southern College with a degree in Spanish. Following my graduation, I completed a year of service with AmeriCorps at a nonprofit in Alamosa, Colorado, serving at a homeless shelter and food bank. After my AmeriCorps year, I worked at a local university for a federal program supporting first-generation students. I enjoy hiking, learning about new cultures, and traveling. I am excited to join the NPH family!
I am eager to continue my passion for service with NPH as the Communications Officer Assistant in Guatemala! My AmeriCorps year taught me about the importance of seeing dignity in others, and I believe that NPH also upholds this value. I am drawn to the strong community that NPH offers, and I look forward to developing meaningful relationships with the children, volunteers, staff, and community members. I hope to contribute to the overall mission of NPH through my volunteer year and develop my language and cultural skills in Guatemala.

…
Hi! My name is Lucy, and I’m from Minneapolis. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in May 2024. I majored in Genetics and Genomics with a minor in Environmental Studies. I hope to continue my education and pursue a degree in epidemiology or bioinformatics. I have an older brother, a younger sister, and two pups. I love being outdoors, traveling, baking, and both watching and playing fútbol!
I am inspired to serve at NPH because I feel indebted to the kindness of strangers who sponsored my father to the United States. My family is from Vietnam and lived through a war. It’s only through luck and privilege that I’ve been able to grow up in a safe and loving home. I believe every child should be able to live in a safe environment, and serving at NPH allows me to help advocate for and protect children. I am extremely privileged to be able to dedicate my time to serve others.

Oberlin, OH Hiram College; The American Graduate School of International Management July 2024 NPH Honduras Montessori English Teacher |
…
I have been an educator for many years and, in my most recent job, worked with students from all over the world. In my free time, I enjoy writing short stories, essays, and poetry. My husband and I are avid hikers and recently walked the Camino de Santiago which helped lead us to our decision to apply to NPH. We have three children and two grandchildren.
Years ago, my husband and I dreamed about starting a school overseas. We were (and are) thoroughly unqualified for such an endeavor. But the idea persisted. I’m excited to be a part of NPH Honduras where I can learn about a new country and culture, where I can improve my Spanish skills, and, most importantly, help make small changes in the lives of others while teaching overseas.

Oberlin, OH Adams State University January 2025 NPH Guatemala OneFamily Social Worker |
…
Hello everyone! This program truly feels like a natural progression for me. In 2022, I had the privilege of spending nearly six months in Peru teaching English outside of Cusco. Following that, I served in an AmeriCorps program as a case manager for a small homeless shelter in rural Colorado. Most recently, I worked as a permanent supportive housing case manager, assisting individuals transitioning out of homelessness to achieve self-identified goals. I am passionate about culture, language, and spending time with family and friends. I am very honored to be working with NPH Guatemala as a OneFamily Social Worker.
When I was 17 years old, I had the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua for a school trip. While I did not speak any Spanish at the time, I left with a newfound love and appreciation for the language and the warmth of Latin American culture. I have a very fond memory of promising myself that I would return to the region after such a brief yet impactful trip. Since then, I have been striving to improve my skills and enrich my passion for human connection as well as bridging cultural divides. In 2022, I served in Tankarpata, Peru, with a local nonprofit as an English teacher. When I came back to the United States, I again felt a strong desire to return to Latin America after such a profound experience. While I am blessed to have had two very formative years within the realm of social work in Colorado, I have been searching for a platform to answer this calling since. My parents, who are also current volunteers, introduced me to Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. After conversations with Jennifer Foster and Guatemala volunteer coordinator Sofía López, I knew that this program would feel like home for me.

Hello! My name is Gavin. I was born in upstate New York but went to high school in North Carolina and am currently a senior at the University of Notre Dame studying on the pre-med track. I have two older brothers, one of whom was also a volunteer at NPH several years ago! When I have free time, I like to spend as much of it outside as possible, doing things like hiking, running, and playing sports. I am excited for my year at NPH!
I want to serve at NPH because I really believe in the importance of its mission. Father Wasson’s belief that ‘if you know how to work and how to love, you will be fine in this life’ really resonates with me. I want to be able to help see this played out at NPH Dominican Republic. I am hopeful that spending a year with the children of NPH will be fruitful for me and for them. Additionally, I want to work in a medical setting to provide care which will help people from the surrounding community improve their quality of life.

Cupertino, CA University of Southern California January 2024 NPH Honduras Surgery Center Patient Care Coordinator |
…
I was born and raised in California, and also attended college in California. I have two younger brothers, Chris and Charlie, and both are graduating this year! I am quite the homebody, and the occasional fan of exploring the outdoors. Since graduating college, I’ve worked a variety of jobs as I completed my post-bach in preparation to apply to medical school. I worked as a medical scribe for a children’s hospital, nanny, and English teacher, all of which were very different, but included my passion of working with children. I am very excited and grateful for this next role I am taking on, as a part of the NPH family in Honduras!
I want to serve as a volunteer for NPH because it is an opportunity to give my time to an organization that I truly believe in. Additionally, I get to work with children, just as I had done back home, although in a different but exciting and new capacity!

…
Hi, my name is Morgan Zangs and I was born and raised in Minnesota in a town called Eden Prairie, about 30 minutes outside Minneapolis. I have two older brothers and a dog named Auggie who is an adorable Golden Retriever. I am graduating from the University of Iowa with a degree in Communications Studies and Entrepreneurial Management. I have been volunteering my entire life and a part of various organizations! I love to travel and experience many different cultures. I am so happy to be a part of the NPH family!
My passion for volunteering comes from my mother. She has instilled in our family how important it is to give to others. I participated in a mission trip to Port-au-Prince Haiti in 2016 where I was able to experience the direct impact of my work and was overwhelmed by the joy it brought me. Since then, I have been volunteering as much as I can. My family has been involved in NPH since I was young, and I have always admired the work they do. I knew after college that I wanted to take the time to learn from others and make an impact where it is needed. NPH holds the same values and commitments to others that I see in myself. I felt a pull to the organization and knew it was where I would belong. I can’t wait to work with the children and am grateful for this opportunity.
